David, are you sure that your Nook HD+ is running the latest software? I know that the Nook HDs had performance issues a couple months ago before release, but I thought those issues had been fixed. I watched a review of the Nook HD (not the HD+) by MobileTechReview and in that review Lisa Gade said the performance issues had been fixed. She said the Nook HD is no longer sluggish and is even zippier than the Kindle Fire HD.
