B&N don’t profit from the hombrew community. While they would sell a lot of tablets this way, the tablets would easily access other stores, and not just the Nook store (which is how they want this tablet to be used).
They’re not hardware sellers, they’re booksellers.
So where’s the dollar line break? As long as you don’t sell below cost, more devices = more money. Since you would be jailbreaking/unlocking to an OS that actually supports your app, you can still get your book revenue and more more devices. It’s risky but if you make the commitment to sell hardware, you should take every advantage available to you (like not locking the bootloader or not using OMAP chips).
