Given that my Nexus 7 dies in about three days whether I use it or not, I’m pleasantly surprised by what the Nook HD+ can do.

My guess is that there are no Google Location Services at work on this tablet, which is what eats the Nexus 7’s battery and most Android phone batteries when you’re not using them. Google really needs to work on that.

I actually usually leave these services on because they are useful (that’s how you get stuff like Google Now cards and weather updates for your location) but I have at least tested my tablets and phones with them off and it’s a night and day difference. Location Service alone uses about 0.7% of my battery charge per hour according to Better Battery Stats. That may not seem like much, but if you don’t use your tablet for a few days, it can be almost dead by the time you do, even after a full charge.

BN may also be doing something with the wifi, so that it only connects when you turn it on (if it’s not a general-purpose tablet, it probably doesn’t need an always-on connection). If that’s the case, then it’s probably really almost totally off when it’s asleep, only staying awake enough to know when you hit the power button. I wish every device were like that.
