Great article and pictures. Thanks Dante D’Oranzio and Verizon for letting you do the story. Having worked in CO cable vaults and manholes in other big cities I am as amassed as many of the other posters.
One thing that slows converting from copper to fiber in normal times is the copper cable sometimes takes up the only access to the customer building with out digging up the sidewalk. You also have to keep the old service up while you convert. Things go a lot faster when you do it in failure mode. This is a a gift from God for all the customers to be converted to fiber in just a few months. The other problem is if Verizon needed to put electronics in the customer buildings the building owners wanted to charge an arm and a leg for the small space the equipment took up. I bet they get that space for free now.
