You must’ve had the iPad Mini Wifi-only model. Otherwise, the iPad Mini w/ LTE would do the same thing.
You mention missing the faster LTE⦠truth be told you could use the faux-4G of the Nexus for most things, but you still have the option of tethering to an LTE phone if you need something faster. One thing I’ve done a few times is to tether to my iPhone 5 to start a movie and let it buffer a bit, pause, switch off the tethering and let the tablet drop back to 3g/4g, then resume the video. You get good battery life this way, but don’t have to wait long for the video to start…
