I think they’re putting it out there as a way to push Office to people. Right now on iOS and Android, things like Pages and Google Docs dominate. Since Microsoft makes the best desktop word processing/productivity suite, I think they want to dominate on all platforms.
I do think they want some form of success, but I definitely don’t think they’re expecting to make billions off of it. The strategy, I"m sure, is to get iOS and Android users using Office on their tablets/phones and then get them to use Office on their desktops as well.
