If they aren’t planning on it being a success then why bother? At the very least they’ll expect a return on their investment. Also, if these products fail it won’t look bad for the platform, buy rather for MS because they released poor quality apps.
These devices have been around for a while, and people have seen what they are capable of. If Apple can pull off something like GarageBand, then MS having a poorly implemented word processor isn’t going to look bad on Apple.
