I think that that’s their main problem, it feels like the Windows 8 dual-interface direction was a fairly recent decision. I think that Microsoft’s newest direction has a lot of promise but it seems like Windows 8 could have used a bit more time in the oven. It also still feels like Windows Phone and Windows 8/RT aren’t as cohesive as they should be.
Eventually I see Windows RT (which really needs a better brand name by the way) being Metro/Modern/Windows-8-App-Store-Style/Immersive-UI only. For this release it just wasn’t ready. You still need the desktop for all of the control panel functions that aren’t in Metro yet as well as for Office.
