E-ink is like an advanced etch-a-sketch screen. It needs to refresh every so often to “clear the pixels” from the screen. The pixels aren’t constantly refreshing like LCD pixels so you see the black flash every so often when they refresh. It’s not as bad as you think. No power is being used until the pixels realign themselves when you turn the page, which is why they have such a long battery life.
