The main difference, I think, is that the step from Fire HD prices (starting from £159 in the UK) to iPad prices (£399 in the UK) isn’t as high (just £240) as the step between a Mercedes and a Kia (many thousands of quids). The cars are probably paid for in monthly instalments with rates of interest and so on, with hefty deposits.
The tablets are just save-up-and-then-spend-it types of items. If you want a tablet but don’t have a fat income, the best thing to do is save the money, until you can afford the best one, between now and [best tablet release date]+[1 year], wait for the next version of it to come out and then spend that money on the latest and greatest. Doing that with a car isn’t really happening.
