Because it’s impossible to compare devices 1:1, even those that are considered competing devices in the same price range. You can get a good idea of whether a device is good or not simply by reading the adjectives in the verdict section. Comprehension is the name of the game.

The numbering system also has the problem in that it floats depending on what else is available. Eg. the ecosystem scores dropped with newer phones because the competition was leap-frogging it so you get situations where newer, objectively better devices would get lower scores than their predecessors.

Also, the people who get hung over a digit are the worst. I’m sure it’s a headache for the editors here to deal with, just as unpleasant it is for me to read. If the Lumia 900 review didn’t use a number but kept every other written criticism intact, I don’t think it would have been the shitstorm it turned into.
