Maybe some people are more sensitive to it than others, but as long as the screen has a decent flicker-free refresh rate, I have no eye strain whatsoever reading on an LCD. A CRT would be another story, but modern LCD’s are redqally easy on the eyes, in more ways than one. I spent nearly 5 hours this weekend in more or less one sitting (trying desperately to make headway in Book 5 of Game of Thrones, but that’s another story). The point being, I use the sepia setting, which my eyes kind of wash out to “white” after a bit of looking at it, and I don’t have any eye strain problems at all. I’ll grant you that it doesn’t look as good in direct sunlight, but the contrast on my Nexus 7 is such that with the brightness up, it’s still perfectly readable. It eats the battery for breakfast, but that’s a trade-off I can make. Being a smartphone user, I’m never far from a charging cable anyway.
