In Europe all mobile phone manufacturers are being pushed to standardise on chargers (micro usb). Unfortunately the initiative is a bit weak and allows for adapters which Apple use.
The idea is manufacturers will stop providing chargers in box soon because everyone will have several. Considering how many mobile phones people get through it adds up to quite a saving.
