I work for a large tech company that gives monetary awards for every patent filed, and then doubles it if the patent is granted. Once you get a certain number of granted patents (I forget how many exactly, maybe 10?) you get another large bonus on top of that. And I know for a fact that some of the patents the company files aren’t actually planned to be used in a product, at least not in the near term. Its basically done “just in case”.
