I work for a large multi-national company (I won’t name it here), and we have to have annual training on ethics and certify it with a test and an understanding that we will be terminated for violating company ethics. I think Google’s startup roots have bit them in the case of OpenStreetMaps and Chrome marketing since they have grown very quickly. My biggest problem with Google was the Mocality incident which involved the hiring of many people to manually crawl the Mocality website, a call center with those employees posing as Mocality employees when cold-calling Mocality’s customers, the moving of those people and their effort to a new location and IP address at least once and the visibility of Google’s head guy over Kenyan (or maybe African) initiatives. It seems very unlikely that he was given free reign with enough money to do all that without having to justify it to HR, accounting, and, of course, the executive team.

This incident, if true, would be pretty hard to explain. It is still just an allegation though and a lawsuit. Innocent until proven guilty.
