Your assertion of a language’s “one purpose” is incorrect. That is its main purpose, but not its only one. Languages contain a lot of history in them. Saying that has no value is the same as saying that history has no value.

For example, you can trace population changes (due to invasions, immigration, occupation, etc) to specific words in any given language. You can trace where a people have lived based on words and expressions they use. For anyone who cares about these things language is very important.
