Simple trick. I build a cassette tape (TDK-60 type) player out of a lego kit just to see if it would work. the lego motors varied too much in speed to output anything acceptable but the whole point was to see if Square reader could work for that purpose. The audio was recorded simply with the built in Android sound recorder.
On another note, the same method was used to record a credit card swipe, in which the Square app just “listens” for an audio track (it oddly sounds like someone dry-heaving when played back). This audio was successfully played back into the Square app to which it though was a valid card swipe. So Theoretically, all your credit card purchases going through a Square reader, your card info could be compromised.
