I just have hard time buying that theory. Not only ARM is ahead in app compatibility, they are getting better, fast. The latest chips still haven’t moved onto the new architecture (A15) and they still compete very favourably against Intel.
Just as importantly, ARM allows everyone to customize chips as they see fit. Apple needed a chip with a powerful GPU specially for their high resolution iPad. They were able to equip the old A5 with a faster GPU just to meet their specs. Such flexibility will be difficult to achieve with Intel.
