I’ve had the 18-200 since it first came out, and it’s my go-to lens 90% of the time. Instead of wasting time switching lenses, I can be taking pictures.
As an exercise, I photographed a client’s engagement session using the D300 and 18-200 VR (not even the VR-II). My normal kit for such things at the time was a pair of D700s, the 24-70/2.8 and the 70-200/2.8 VR. Guess what? Nobody complained about the results. Why? Because they weren’t pixel-peeping the images at 100% magnification on the computer screen. Yes, there is a visible difference if you shoot identical scenes side-by-side with better equipment. But the difference is often irrelevant if the photography itself is awesome.
