I’m no security expert, but in the past, one could say that it required an extra amount of power to salt all of your passwords, but with rainbow tablets and powerful CPUs of today, it’s a silly excuse.
The real reason why, even after the huge fiasco last year that was the Sony hacking event, security isn’t upgraded is because the IT security guy has to ask for a budget and justify costs to his boss, and without that money, no upgrades! Protecting data is not considered a priority until a breach sadly.
