nicely argumented writeup, but i see some problems with your reasoning.
first of all, your argument about the world-wide reach of amazon is not applicable because a) they sell ebooks only in the US, and b) they sell most other things (like physical books) worldwide and it didn’t effect the publishing industry negatively, on the contrary, better choice and lower prices for the consumers.
They simply could establish a price that would be beyond the reach of the competition
why is that? why is it out of reach of the biggest company in the world, with $100 Billions in the bank?
the answer is apple never wants to compete on price alone, and does whatever it can to get out of that game and avoid direct comparison/competition: it’s the only PC company that doesn’t sell PCs, only “Macs”. it doesn’t sell wifi routers, it sells “AirPorts”. it doesn’t sell monitors, it sells “cinema displays”. it’s not a high resolution but “retina display”, it’s “face time” not video call, it’s “iBooks” not ebooks.
that’s anti-consumer if you ask me, and so are price-fixing, and agency models..
