I think the article summed it up best.. you have to spend billions just to get to third place right now. Timing is everything in industry people. Apple had huge demand for the iPhone and therefore had a huge demand for parts. That put a premium for parts on anyone else trying to get in on it. And if you didn’t have the money to front a factory or whatever was needed, you lost. I agree that an iPhone quality piece of hardware would have probably saved Palm. They rushed WebOS which was going to hurt them initially but if they had the hardware in place they could have fixed the software and it would have been a really serious contender with iPhone and Droid. But that didn’t happen. Opportunity lost. RIP palm. I am certain we will be able to bury RIM right next to them.
