Cell development proceeded and continued after the PlayStation 3. They could, if the were minded, drop in a part with dual SPEs and, if I recall right, upto 16 SPUs. And while this would be great for backwards compatibility with the PS3 it simply wouldn’t stack up well if Microsoft go the 80×86 route.
It’ll certainly be weird if Sony do drop the weird architecture in the PS4, the PlayStation was a bit weird, the EmotionEngine in the PS2 was weird and Cell was, ahem, a “challenge” but I think the fact that Sony went with ARM + PowerVR in the Vita is a sign that they may be done with custom/bespoke/freaky hardware.
