'Warcraft' movie gets pushed to 2016 to avoid 'Star Wars' onslaught

World of Warcraft movie concept art (KOTAKU)

Earlier this month we got a peek at some early concept art from director Duncan Jones' upcoming Warcraft movie, but the wait for the real thing just got a little longer. Variety reports that Universal Studios and Legendary Pictures have pushed the release date of the film from December of 2015 all the way out to March 11th, 2016. While a decent delay, the news doesn't necessarily indicate any sort of problems with the project itself. It's likely a direct reaction to Disney's recent announcement that Star Wars: Episode VII would be hitting theaters on December 18th, 2015 — the same date the Warcraft film had initially claimed for its own.

The news comes as Jones — best known as the director of the sci-fi sleeper Moon and the Jake Gyllenhaal thriller Source Code — steps away from a biopic of James Bond creator Ian Fleming. The Wrap reports that while Jones had been eager to helm the Fleming film, scheduling with Warcraft simply wasn't workable. Instead, the producers of that project will be looking for a new director to step in with an eye towards casting the film next year.
