Republican governor of New Jersey Chris Christie will be up for re-election this November, and he's getting some official support from the biggest man in Silicon Valley, Mark Zuckerberg. Governor Christie and Zuckerberg's relationship isn't new, but now Zuckerberg will hold a fundraiser for Christie's re-election campaign at his Palo Alto home, reports Buzzfeed. This mutual friendship began back in 2010 when Zuckerberg donated $100 million to Newark's public school system — since then, Zuckerberg has worked with Christie and Newark Mayor Cory Booker to help reform the local education agenda.
However, this fundraiser marks a bit of a change in the relationship — rather than simply working with the local government, he's now throwing his weight behind the Christie and the Republican party in this year's campaign. That said, the relationship still appears strongly based on Zuckerberg's interest in New Jersey education reform. "Mark and Priscilla have worked closely with Governor Christie on education reform in the Newark school system," Facebook spokesperson Sarah Feinberg told Buzzfeed. "They admire his leadership on education reform and other issues and look forward to continuing their important work together on behalf of Newark's schoolchildren." Given Governor Christie's recent popularity thanks to how he handled the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the support of a powerful figure like Zuckerberg likely won't hurt.
