Battlefield developer will require a 64-bit OS for future games


As video games become more demanding, performance becomes a matter of the utmost importance and, starting next year, Battlefield developer Dice will be tapping into your operating systems to help run its engine. Rendering architect Johan Andersson tweeted, "We'll have Frostbite-powered games in 2013 that will _require_ a 64-bit OS." The obvious reason for the decision is that 64-bit operating systems can handle RAM and data more efficiently than 32-bit counterparts. As the platform continues to mature, more users will find themselves with a 64-bit operating system, but incompatible drivers, software, and the lack of need for the extra power left many with little reason to upgrade before the release of Windows 7. Andersson continued by saying, "If you are on 32-bit, great opportunity to upgrade to Windows 8," but later clarified that 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Vista could be used as well.
