Netflix backs new season of 'Arrested Development' in exclusive, streaming-only deal

Arrested Development 650

Although Netflix has fallen on hard times lately, it appears the company has a few tricks up its sleeve to stay relevant in the face of falling subscriber numbers: exclusive content. The latest deal will bring new episodes of the much-loved show Arrested Development exclusively to Netflix customers in the first half of 2013, though only in the US. Naturally, the first three seasons of Arrested Development are available on Netflix today.

The deal is a shift from Netflix's standard procedure of signing deals for existing content — notably the company recently shored up agreements with several studios for the UK and Ireland and the CW Network in the US — though Netflix will have at least one other original series coming later this year. For its part, Fox executives seemed bullish about "Netflix's bold entrance into original programming," which may mean that the studio could be open to similar deals in the future.

I’m very curious if Topolsky is a Arrested Development fan. This would settle the ‘pseudo-intellectual hipster’ thing once and for all. This is the litmus test.

I can’t stop hearing about this Funke fellow. Funke, Funke, Funke, that’s all I ever hear!
Welcome back, Arrested Development! Too bad I canceled Netflix already.

Mr F!

^ As I read it, I could hear the Mister Efff… whispered by Bond-chicks.

Haha same!

Awesome… will the supposed movie be out before or after this?

After

This is huge news…

No man…This is joyous news!

Fox made a Huge Tiny mistake canceling this show….

who?

this show?

is it funny or something?

Well played Netflix! 2013 can’t get here soon enough.

That’s pretty cynical given that we’ll all be dead

“I just blue myself”

Tobias… you blow hard!

Good move Netflix.

But 2013 is soooo far away…

I’m just gonna download it anyway LOL

Yeah, why support the show?

exactly, that’s not why it got canceled in the first place or anything.

The Russo brothers, who directed the pilot of this show, also work on NBC’s Community. Save Community! #sixseasonsandamovie

That makes a lot of sense, actually, considering that I think of Community as the next AD. Save Community!!

Netflix finally makes a good decision!

And now: FIREFLY!

2013 is so far away!

…Canada? Or am I gonna have to steal this if I want to watch it?

looks that way. i’ve always kind of felt sorry for netflix, i know they have a hard time negotiating with content owners to get streaming rights in canada. but now they have an exclusive, and they don’t let canadians in on it? fuck netflix.

I am an ex-NetFlix user but the opportunity to support a new production model AND see Arrested development is one I can’t pass up.

If you don’t mind, bring back Caprica and Battlestar while your at it.

and Journey Man

I loved Arrested Development but I’m not sure that it really needs more episodes.

It does if it wants to fill us in on what’s happened to the Bluths before the movie comes out.

I don’t think there should be a movie, either.

Sigh. Looks like Netflix will be getting $16 out of me come 2013. Or $25, if they keep hiking the price.

You don’t need to pay $16 if you don’t want to. You can opt for either the streaming ($8) or DVD delivery ($8) or both. Personally, my family was never even getting DVD’s sent to the house and we only use the streaming aspect of the service so we weren’t too mad about the change but it still sucks that it was done. I think the movie studios are more to blame than Netflix themselves though but I haven’t done the research.

Taste the happy, Michael!

Ooh, I can taste those meaty, leading man parts in my mouth!

Tastes like sad.

God, I love Arrested Development, by all means give Netflix an exclusive, but I am going to need these new ones on disc to go with the others.

They’re probably going to use it as an exclusive for some x-time limit, before selling them on hard media. Or they can do what HBO, Showtime and others do, and be the only ones who can stream/broadcast the show on the internet and television, but after a few months of running it’s course they’ll release on DVD and Blu-ray.

And Netflix, it this doesn’t work out for you, there is always money in the banana stand.

Them…?

Looks like I’m going back to Netflix.

I hate michael Cera, he has no talent like hif BFF Jack Black!

yes, yes, yes, but why with netflix?

The future for niche market content? I think so. I hope it starts to work this way for smaller niche content too. It gets harder and harder to figure out the monetization factor though.

Ok Netflix, I’m coming back. But if these episodes aren’t as epic as the originals, it’s over!

OH MY GOD YES.

I guess this isn’t for British eyes only…
